July 2015 – The State of X-Plane July 2015

Hello there!

X-Plane 10.40, the latest update for desktops, is currently in beta testing. The developers have been hard at work making this an incredibly feature-rich update, and test users are making sure all the new features work perfectly. The update will include changes to how scenery is loaded, anonymous usage data tracking, new ATC functionality, and more.

Don’t miss our tips on how to use the new map in X-Plane 10 Mobile, or download an airliner with over 200 different liveries below.

The State of Laminar Research

Hello! Austin Meyer here.

We are cranking madly on X-Plane 10.40, adding tons of new features that you have been asking for, but also reorganizing the code from the inside out to be cleaner and better organized. THIS is what will allow us to have faster load-times, better frame-rates, and fewer bugs in the future (which is an ever-present goal that simply never goes away)!

More important than all of my other work combined, I continue with my documentary on the absolute INSANITY of the United States Patent System, which is a far worse disaster than you can imagine, and does far more harm to innovation and business in this country than you could possibly believe. The documentary that I am making on the subject will begin to expose the tip of the iceberg of the problem, as I travel around the country interviewing the people affected. Head on over to my blog to see the latest amazing things that I have learned about flying from my Evolution, and the sea of absurdity that I have discovered from researching the disaster of incompetence and extortion that is our Patent System.

On a lighter note as well, check out this film. THIS one is interesting. Imagine a company is sued by patent trolls, and then takes out a patent to troll the trolls! This will be an indie-film comedy, and I have a feeling it might wind up being hilarious. They need funding to bring this timely comedy to life, and the awareness that it could bring about patent trolling is significant. Could you consider helping fund these people? I already have, and I am really excited to see the results!

Tips and Tricks

Let’s show some love to the newest addition to X-Plane 10 Mobile–the kneeboard map! The new map feature is only available in Freeflight in the latest version of the app (v10.1). Once you’re situated in the cockpit, tap or drag the gray tab on the left side to open the map of the area. Tap aircraft, airports, VORs or localizer/ILS beams to get tons of information. You can also use these icons to:

  • Change the location of your aircraft by dragging its icon
  • Instantly tune radios by tapping Tune NAV-1 or NAV-2
  • Change runways by tapping a runway number
  • Set up 10nm final approaches by tapping Final

If you’re not familiar with the NAVAIDs or how to read the map, the manual has a thorough explanation. Using the map will let you take your solo flights to a whole new level of complexity. Try shooting approaches with one or more failures turned on for the ultimate challenge!

Airliner enthusiasts will love the Boeing 737-800 from the x737project. This short- to medium-range, twinjet, narrow-body airliner includes dramatic improvements to the flight model for X-Plane 10, the autopilot, and exterior lighting. Over 1000 custom datarefs and commands are included, realistic two and three state switches are modeled, and most impressively, over 200 free liveries are available!
