Hello there!

We’re so excited to announce the recently released digital download version of X-Plane 10 is available on our website! This new product was rolled out as part of the changes for the upcoming 10.40 version release and is now available for purchase. We also have more information on another upcoming feature and a link to a massive HD freeware scenery below.

X-Plane 10 Digital Download

X-Plane 10 Digital Download Edition is a new and more convenient way to purchase the simulator. It is exactly the same as X-Plane 10 on DVD except you don’t have to pay for shipping or wait for DVDs to arrive before you can install the simulator. Since you purchase it directly from Laminar Research, you don’t have to have an account with any third parties either. As with all other versions, it runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, and includes the full 60 GB worth of world scenery.

Please note that if you already own X-Plane, the digital download is not an update–it is an entirely new product that will not affect how you use X-Plane in any way. However, if you are are tired of carrying around an external DVD drive, tying up a USB port with the USB-unlock key, want to get a new computer with no DVD drive, or anything like that, you can purchase an additional copy of X-Plane Digital Download to solve those issues.

Check out the article X-Plane Digital Download for more information on how the new product works, or head straight to the store to buy your copy.

Tips and Tricks

X-Plane 10.40 is still in beta testing, but we’ve made a lot of changes for this update that we’ll be taking a closer look at here. One of the new features is the option to send anonymous usage information to Laminar Research.

We have not become the next Spyware Kings with this change–when you’re able to upgrade to 10.40, the option to send your usage data will be turned off by default. But it’s in your interest to opt-in to this feature because your usage data helps us make better decisions about the future of X-Plane. It’s like casting a vote for us to support your hardware configuration, to build more of the planes you like to fly, or to improve the airports that you like to fly at.

Once the 10.40 update is released, you can opt to send your data to us by updating and starting X-Plane. Then:

Open the Operations and Warnings screen (found under the Settings menu)
Check the box labeled “Send usage data to Laminar Research”
The information we collect is 100% anonymous, and 100% essential to the future of X-Plane. If you’d like to read more about how our data collection works, check out the article “Let X-Plane Tell Us How You Use X-Plane.”

If you find that X-Plane’s default scenery just doesn’t maximize your computer’s resources enough, and you want to kick it up a few notches, check out the high-definition scenery packs available from Alpilotx. X-Plane 10 HD Scenery Mesh v3 is a much higher resolution base mesh than the default, so it allows for a much more detailed representation of the elevation profile of the landscape. It more accurately models water features, streets, railroads, and urban parks.

Alpilotx’s HD Scenery is a massive download that covers select portions of the world. Make sure to check before installing that it will be a good fit for you. Check out all the specs, screenshots, and more at Alpilotx.net.
